“Congress hasn’t been able to handle the situation in Andhra Pradesh. It has let the state burn,” said Gadkari who drew a contrast with his own party saying that three states had been carved out during the BJP’s stint at the Centre without any hiccups.

He said Uttarakhand, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand had a smooth transition into states during the BJP rule under A B Vajpayee.

Gadkari added that it was his party that had first approved of smaller states but refrained from commenting on the demand being raised by several leaders for a separate Vidarbha state in Maharashtra. Gadkari, who was speaking at a felicitation function in Mumbai, hails from Vidarbha.

Gadkari also met BJP state unit workers and urged them to strengthen the party to ensure 100 seats in the next Assembly elections.

“We should aim to strengthen the party right from the talukas and ensure that our vote share increases by 10 per cent,” he said.

Gopinath Munde, who was present at the felicitation function, said that efforts were being made to project the BJP as a weak party but they were the largest opposition party in the state. The Beed MP said, “We will work so efficiently in Delhi that Maharashtrians will be proud of us. The responsibilities placed on us are a big challenge. We will make efforts to ensure a return to power in 2014.”

‘For Balasaheb, I’m still Nitin’Nitin Gadkari will meet Shiv Sena chief Balasaheb Thackeray on Monday afternoon. It will be his first meeting with Balasaheb after his appointment as BJP national president. “I will meet Balasaheb on Monday. I will seek his blessings as I will always be Nitin to him,” said Gadkari.

Adding the loss caused to businesses because of the seemingly unending spate of shutdowns in Telangana, the figure could be a few hundred crores of rupees more.

Of the total loss to properties, about 80 per cent was caused in Telangana region alone where people demanding a separate state have been more “violent,” the sources said. As many as 52 public and 28 private properties were burnt while 62 public and 114 private properties were damaged in the violence that broke out in Telangana region from November 29 to December 9, after TRS chief K Chandrasekhar Rao began his indefinite fast demanding separate statehood for Telanagana.

The agitations supporting a united state recorded 37 public properties and 11 private properties being burnt and 46 public and 47 private properties damaged between December 10 and 23, statistics compiled by the police reveal.

The state-run Andhra Pradesh Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) bore the brunt of the strife with 35 buses being burnt and another to 214 damaged. 50 private buses were also damaged and seven were set on fire by Telangana protesters.

Pro-Telangana groups went on a rampage and damaged as many as 268 buses in the state capital and other districts of Telangana region on a single day following the Centre’s announcement on the statehood issue on December 23. Besides, over 50 public and over 150 private properties were also badly burnt or damaged in the second round of “protests” in Telangana so far.

According to Transport Minister S Vijayarama Raju, APSRTC suffered a loss of over Rs 110 crore since November 29.

“These are only bare estimates as the destructions are still continuing in Telangana region,” a top ranking bureaucrat said.

The protesters also targeted railway properties causing a loss of several crores of rupees due to burning of four railway stations and other damages at various places in all the three regions of Andhra Pradesh.

The protesters damaged railway signalling panels and equipments besides burning two bogies and pelting stones on two Express trains.

“Apart from attacks on railway properties in view of bandhs, rail rokos and demonstrations, railways are also losing particularly due to non-transportation of goods and parcel which are lying at different railway stations,” a senior official of the South Central Railway (SCR) said.

As many as 82 persons tried to end their lives for Telangana state while 49 attempted suicide in Andhra and Rayalaseema regions, police sources said.

NEW DELHI: After seven weeks of steady rise, annual inflation in food articles eased marginally to 18.65% for the week ended December 12, from 19.95% for the previous week, following a drop in prices of cereals and fruit and vegetables as more supplies reached the market.

Prices of food articles declined 1.2% during the course of the week. The government’s decision to release wheat in the open market is also expected to have an impact on the prices soon.

Chetan Ahya of Morgan Stanley pointed out in a research note that food inflation will moderate to about 15% over the next three months. “Strong growth in winter crop output, which is due for harvesting in March-April, should also help to some extent,” Ahya said.

Further, strengthening in rupee on account of strong capital inflows into the second-fastest growing major economy in the world is also expected to keep a check on inflation.

“Economics literature shows that a 10% appreciation in rupee will help in cutting wholesale price inflation any where between 1% to 3%,” said Indranil Pan, chief economist at Kotak Mahindra Bank.

Indian rupee has appreciated by more than 4.3% in this fiscal, the third highest appreciation among Asian currencies according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

According to Mr Pan, although the central bank may not use rupee appreciation as a way to tame inflation, it will have a softening effect on inflation in the short term.

The annual wholesale price inflation rose to 4.78% in November from 1.34% in the month before.

Finance minister Pranab Mukherjee and Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh were among top policymakers who expressed their concern on rising food price inflation on Wednesday.

The index for non-food articles rose 2.4% during the week. This group includes primary commodities that go into manufacture of other products. The inflation in this category is now 7.97%, steadily going up over the last couple of months. The increase in prices of these commodities could suggest a stronger demand from the manufacturing sector.

After being rattled by one of the worst financial turmoils, the US economy is on the recovery path and the pace of job cuts has come down in recent months.

The US Labor Department in a statement today said that initial claims for unemployment benefits declined to 452,000 for the week ended December 19. This is a fall of 28,000 as compared to 480,000 in the previous week.

“The four-week moving average was 465,250, a decrease of 2,750 from the previous week’s revised average of 468,000,” the statement noted.

Further, the count of people receiving jobless benefits slid by 127,000 to 5,076,000 for the week ended December 12.

In the previous week, the same stood at 5,203,000.

“The four-week moving average was 5,233,000, a decrease of 90,000 from the preceding week’s revised average of 5,323,000,” it added.

The national unemployment rate slipped to 10 per cent in November from a 26-year high of 10.2 per cent in October. Millions of jobs have vanished in the past one year, as companies trimmed their workforce to bring down costs.

Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has lost Rs 9 crore and 400 tonne of crude oil production in the last three days due to the 96-hour ONGC bandh called by the All Assam Students Union (AASU) from Monday in upper Assam.

According to an ONGC spokesman here, oil drilling, transportation and production operations were severely hit following the bandh causing the PSU oil firm to lose Rs 3 crore a day and 400 tonne of crude in the last three days.

Drilling operations and production in the Rudrasagar, Geleky, Lakwa and other oil fields in the district had almost come to a standstill even as an attempt was being made to maintain production from the safety point of view, the spokesman said.

ONGC Onshore Director Ajit Hazarika told PTI that this halt in the oil flow during winter has caused loss in terms of both money and natural resources.

“There is a danger of wax formation in the oil wells which will negatively affect oil exploration,” he said.

Stating there was no proposal to separate ONGC-Assam Assets from ONGC, Hazarika said AASU should withdraw its bandh in the interest of the people of the state as ONGC-Assam Assets would be exclusively for the state and will not be privatised.

Andhra Bank has raised Rs 600 crore by selling bonds in two tranches in current month.

The bank raised Rs 280 crore by issuing upper Tier-II bonds. The annual coupon of for this issue was 8.70 per cent. The issue opened on December 14, 2009 and closed on December 15, 2009. “It was fully subscribed on the date of the opening of the issue,” the company said in a notification to the National Stock Exchange.

Another Rs 320.00 crore were raised by issuing lower Tier-II bonds. This issue opened on December 15, 2009 and closed on December 21, 2009. The coupon rate was 8.55 per cent payable annually.

The book runners for the issue were Andhra Bank Merchant Banking Division, Darashaw & Company, AK Capital Services, Axis Bank and ICICI Bank.

George Michael, 70, was a sportscaster best known nationally for his long-running American sports highlights show called The George Michael Sports Machine. Started as a local show in 1980 called George Michael’s Sports Final and then nationally syndicated in 1984, the nationally broadcast show was distributed for syndication by NBC until it left the air following the March 25, 2007 airing. Michael won a Sports Emmy in 1985 for his work on The George Michael Sports Machine.

On 24th December 2009 Michael died at age 70 at Sibley Memorial Hospital after a two-year battle with B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia.

Government today released the first draft to consolidate and simplify Foreign Direct Investment Policy.

Releasing the policy in New Delhi, the commerce minister Anand Sharma said that with all the 177 press notes issued, the policy have been consolidated for better understanding of the investors and stake-holders.

He said the first round of consolidation of the draft policy will be over by Jan. 31, 2010 and the final policy after due consultations will be complete by Mar. 31, 2010.

The drug regulator has pointed out violations of guidelines for Ohm`s liquid manufacturing facility located in Gloversville, New York.

The letter was sent on Dec. 21, 2009 and the site inspection was conducted between July and August this year.

Ranbaxy clarified that it is taking help of PRTM, a consulting firm, to provide expertise and advice on issues cited by the FDA.

The company also said that there were no material deviations in the other two manufacturing plants of Ohm Labs when FDA inspected them earlier this year.

The company will continue to cooperate with the USFDA to bring the matter to closure in a timely manner and remains committed in its efforts of being fully compliant with the US regulatory standards.

Ohm Labs is engaged in the sale and distribution of generic and branded private label and also over-the-counter products in the US.

On 24th December 2009 at least 6 people were killled and around 50 others are feared to be trapped, as an under-construction bridge on the Chambal River at Nayagaon in Kota District, Rajasthan collapsed at around  5.15 pm yesterday when around 100 labourers were working.

6 injured people have been admitted to MBS Hospital in Kota with serious injuries.

Kota Collector T Ravikant said relief operations have already begun and Army’s help has been sought as the number of labourers trapped is still not known.

The reason behind the collapse of the 50-metre bridge being constructed by a Korean company Hyundai is being ascertained, he said.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has announced an ex-gratia of payment of Rs two lakh to families of people killed in the incident and Rs one lakh to the seriously injured and Rs 50,000 to person with minor injuries, an official spokesman said.

NORAD Tracks Santa is a service offered on Christmas Eve by NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, a joint organization of Canada and the United States. Every year on Christmas Eve “NORAD Tracks Santa” claims to follow Santa Claus, as he leaves the North Pole and delivers presents to children around the world.

In 1956, a Colorado Springs-based Sears store ran an advertisement encouraging people to call Santa Claus on a special kind of telephone hotline. Due to a printing error, the phone number that was printed was the hotline was actually for Continental Air Defense Command (CONAD). Then-Colonel Harry Shoup received the first call on Christmas Eve of 1955, from a six-year old boy who began reciting his Christmas list. Shoup then didn’t find the call funny, but after asking the mother of the second caller what was happening, then realizing the mistake that had occurred, he told his staff to give Santa’s position to any child who called in.

Three years on, the government of the United States and Canada combined their respective national domestic air defenses into the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), but the tradition continued.Now major media outlets as well as children call in to inquire on Santa’s location. Titan looks to be the only place in the solar system aside from Earth to have copious quantities of liquid (largely, liquid methane and ethane) on its surface.

The new discovery suggests that Earth and Titan share yet another feature, which is inextricably linked with that surface liquid: common fog, according to researchers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).

The presence of fog provides the first direct evidence for the exchange of material between the surface and the atmosphere, and thus of an active hydrological cycle, which previously had only been known to exist on Earth, the researchers said in a paper published in the latest issue of Astrophysical Journal Letters.

Titan’s south pole is spotted “more or less everywhere” with puddles of methane that give rise to sporadic layers of fog, said planetary astronomer Mike Brown of Caltech, Xinhua reported Saturday.

The researchers made their discovery using data from the Visual and Infrared Mapping Spectrometer (VIMS) onboard the Cassini spacecraft, which has been observing Saturn’s system for the past five years.

The VIMS instrument provides “hyperspectral” imaging, covering a large swath of the visible and infrared spectrum.

Brown and his colleagues searched public online archives to find all Cassini data collected over the moon’s south pole from October 2006 through March 2007. They filtered the data to separate out features occurring at different depths inthe atmosphere, ranging from 20 km to 0.25 km above the surface.

Using other filters, they homed in on “bright” features caused by the scattering of light off small particles — such as the methane droplets present in clouds.

In this way, they isolated clouds located about 750 meters (less than a half-mile) above the ground. These clouds did not extend into the higher altitudes but into the moon’s troposphere, where regular clouds form. In other words, said Brown, they had found fog.

Brown noted that evaporating methane on Titan “means it must have rained, and rain means streams and pools and erosion and geology. The presence of fog on Titan proves, for the first time, that the moon has a currently active methane hydrological cycle”.

The presence of fog also proves that the moon must be dotted with methane pools, Brown said. That’s because any ground-level air, after becoming 100 percent humid and turning into fog, would instantly rise up intothe atmosphere like a giant cumulus cloud.

“The only way to make the fog stick around on the ground is to both add humidity and cool the air just a little,” he explained.(IANS)

The 1,500-pixel sensor chip can mimic the electrical signals sent by a healthy eye through the nervous system to the brain.

The patient, 45, who was identified only by his first name, Miika, was able to orient himself by sight and read letters of the alphabet, according to the magazine.

The device, developed by the German company Retina Implant, was inserted at the University of Tuebingen medical school.

But under university science ethics rules, the experimental device had to be removed several weeks later.

“Miika showed that with an aid we can give people enough sight that they are no longer legally blind,” Eberhart Zrenner, head of the team, was quoted saying. The implant fitted into the retina in a four-hour operation was just three millimetres across.

Zrenner said he would give about two dozen blind people the power of sight next year. Retina Implant’s website said electrical power for the chip will be supplied wirelessly by high-frequency radiation.(DPA)

On Wednesday, 16th December 2009 an earthquake of 3.5 magnitude struck at Southeast Nebraska at 8:53 p.m in night.

Its epicenter was aprox 2 mile outside of Auburn.

According to USGS the earthquake was taken place along the Humboldt Fault Line.

A spokesperson explained that it is not ordinary for tremble to happen in Nebraska, but they are not excessively anxious with this occasion.

In Algeria, for CEEG Spa, KEC will undertake five turnkey projects of 400 KV, 200 KV and 60 KV covering both single and double circuit transmission lines worth Rs 474 crore. The total length of these five projects is 858 KM and the completion period ranges from 12 to 18 months.

In Abu Dhabi, KEC will execute a project of modification and reallocation on existing lines with design and supply of Emergency Line Restoration System (ERS) in Ruwais and Shuweihat for Abu Dhabi Transport Authority/ Ghantoot Transport & Gen. Cont. Est. This project is to be completed within 12 months. The value of this order is Rs 76 crore.

Wall Street also looked set for a positive start.

“This is certainly one of the reasons for the positive market sentiment today,” said Joerg Rahn, chief investment officer at wealth management company Marcard, Stein & Co in Hamburg.

“I’d also say that economic optimism is returning following some days of losses earlier in the month.” MSCI world equity index .MIWD00000PUS rose as high as 302.45, its highest level since late September 2008, and was holding pretty close.

The FTSEurofirst 300 index rose 0.3 percent, while emerging stocks .MSCIEF rose 0.8 percent.

The Markit survey showed the euro zone’s service sector expanded for the third consecutive month in November, underpinning the recovery optimism, although the expansion was at a slower pace than reported early last week.

“We remain positive on European equities over our investment horizon of 12 months,” Standard & Poor’s European Investment Policy Committee said, adding that its 2010 year-end forecast implied a 12 percent upside from current levels.

“We believe that the credit markets are more likely capable than not of absorbing slated government debt issuance, given that long-term rates are still low and inflation expectations are stable.”

U.S. crude oil rose 60 cents to $77.23 a barrel after slipping a day earlier on a larger-than-expected build in U.S. crude inventories.

German government bond futures, the euro zone benchmark, fell 31 ticks.

The dollar .DXY fell 0.3 percent against a basket of major currencies while the yen fell 0.6 percent to 87.88 per dollar.

VIEWSONIC is becoming serious about the India market and launched a wide range of its products here last week. While ViewSonic LCDs and projectors were available till now through resellers, the company now plans to open exclusive outlets for its products like the ViewBook, All-In-One PC, Mini PC and mediaplayers. The ViewBook, which looks strikingly like the MacBook, could be a winner with its Aluminum-Magnesium alloy enclosure, extendable battery life and other high performance features. Hope the company gets its pricing, yet unannounced, right. Another thing that caught our eye was the VPD 500 Mediaplayer with the 5″ screen, 8 GB memory and HD output. The player, ideal for movie buffs, also supports ebooks.

Zino attacks the Mini space

HAS the Mac Mini met its miniature match? Well, the Dell Zino, or the Inspiron Zino HD, comes in a box a bit bigger than the Mini, and adds some cosmetic flavor to the category with a selection of ten replaceable, colorful lids. The “nettop” will arrive in a few configurations, starting at about $230 running Windows Vista operating system. The processors in all models will be supplied by AMD not your everyday Intel Atom and will be able to accommodate an optical multi-drive as well as a Blu-ray disc player. The higher-priced model (at $650, including a 20-inch monitor) also gets an HDMI output, a 500-GB hard drive, and Windows 7 Home Premium. The Apple Mini, meanwhile, soldiers on the desktop, starting at $600 and recently updated with slightly faster processors and more memory.

It even gets a nod from researchers like Thomas H. Lee, a Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, Boston. Attributing the benefits to large, long-term studies, Lee says that “long-running research shows that drinking coffee cuts the risk of dying early from a heart attack or stroke, and the bean improves productivity, too.”

Now, before you make a manic sprint to the nearest store for a cappuccino machine, you may want to listen to what Upasna Kamineni, Vice Chairman, Apollo Charities, and an active campaigner for health issues, has to say. “Coffee is both a health and a social hazard, and the cons far outweigh the pros,” she says. Tata Motors shares closed at Rs 660.90, up 4.99%, on Monday on 30-11-2009 the BSE (^BSESN : 17198.27 +272.05).

At the 63rd annual general meeting of the company in Mumbai, the chairman had hinted at the subject and talked about the progressing work at the company on alternate fuel technology, including hybrids. He had said, “We are working on an eco-car in Thailand, electric vehicles and hybrids.”

The company also talks about use of bio-diesel and ethanol across Tata companies. Tata had also talked about a car project the company is working on with a France company, which will run on compressed air. He, however, expressed doubt about the project, saying “it may or may not happen”. Till October, the company has delivered 10,518 units. The Nano delivery had started in July this year.

Further, the newspaper quoted the company considering exporting Tata Motors’ light truck, Ace, to South Korea, and also assembling or manufacturing the model in its South Korean plant. Further, Tata was quoted saying that the group is interested in Vietnam and evaluating the US market, in which it is yet to make active investments.

P Chandan Chakravarthy of the Kondakappu tribe could not manage to get his dreams take wing but the lad clearly possessed an extraordinary level of determination.

He enrolled at the Andhra Pradesh FLying Club (now known as AP Aviation Academy) in April 1995. Back then, every hour of flying cost Rs 600. By 2001, when he accumulated 267 hours, the cost had spiralled to Rs 2,800 per hours. A resolute Chakravarthy took a bank loan of Rs 7.5 lakh.

He applied to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for his CPL but the DGCA turned him down saying his basic qualification — 10+2 from the Aeronautical Society of India — was not recognized. Chakravarthy moved the AP High Court, but was told the courts could do little about a DGCA policy decision.

Undeterred, the lad went back to school, passed the class 12 exam all over again and applied for a CPL once again, in 2006. But the DGCA turned him down again saying he had not flown 200 hours in the last five years. (By 2006, the criteria had changed from 250 flying hours to 200).

In effect, if Chakravarthy wanted to pursue his dream against all odds, he would have to start afresh and painfully clock up flying hours, each of which now costs Rs 10,000. He would have to invest another Rs 20 lakh.

Despite hurdles, Chakravarthy, did not give up hope overall but in the short term, he decided to drive a taxi to feed his family and pay off the bank loan. In the meantime, he pleaded with the DGCA to exempt him from the mandatory 200 flying hours.

Chakravarthy says he could, at best, meet requirements for CPL renewal, that is 25 hours of flying, which includes 15 hours of solo, four hours of cross country covering 250 nautical miles, five night landings, five hours of instrument flying and tripple test or day, night and instrument test. “It will take me six more months. But to ask for a repeat of entire flying hours is beyond my means,” he says.

Now, he has managed to persuade Congress Working Committee Member Oscar Fernandes to write to civil aviation minister Praful Patel, requesting that his case to be dealt with on humanitarian grounds rather than within rule-bound parameters.

Chakravarthy, who has presented his case afresh to the DGCA, now waits to hear the decision that could mean he either gets to the cockpit or behind his taxi’s steering wheel.

“So far shipping has caused a cooling effect that has slowed down global warming,” Jan Fuglestvedt, of the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research Oslo (CICERO), told Reuters.

“After some decades the net climate effect of shipping will shift from cooling to warming” because of cleaner fuels, he and colleagues in Germany, Britain and Norway wrote in this week’s edition of the journal Environmental Science and Technology.

Toxic sulphur dioxide emitted by burning bunker fuel accounted for the deaths of an estimated 60,000 people worldwide in 2001 through cancer and heart and lung disease, according to a previous study. A clean-up would save thousands of lives.

But sulphur pollution from the fast-growing shipping industry also helps create clouds by providing tiny seeds around which droplets form. Clouds have a cooling effect since sunlight bounces off their white tops.

The scientists argued against deliberate use of pollution from ships as part of possible schemes to shield the planet from sunlight, saying it was too risky and outweighed by the impact on human health.

CLIMATE COOLING

“The available evidence suggests that ‘climate cooling’ by continued shipping emissions of sulphur dioxide would not be advisable,” they wrote.

A clean-up of sulphur from ships will have a “double warming” effect — there will be more sunlight with less pollution and there will be ever more carbon dioxide, the non-toxic greenhouse gas emitted by burning fuel.

Shipping accounts for about 3.3 percent of world carbon dioxide emissions from human sources, emissions the U.N. Climate Panel says will cause more droughts, floods, heatwaves, rising sea levels and disease.

Some scientists, such as Nobel Prize winner Paul Crutzen, have suggested dumping sulphur in the upper atmosphere to slow global warming, one of several proposals for deliberate “geoengineering” to alter the climate system.

A U.N. climate summit in Copenhagen next month will consider new measures to penalise carbon dioxide emissions by both international shipping and aviation — both are outside the existing Kyoto Protocol for slowing emissions until 2012.

Fuglestvedt’s study estimated that it would take roughly 70 years for shipping to become a net contributor to global warming if sulphur dioxide emissions were quickly cut by 90 percent and all other fuel-related emissions stayed at 2000 levels.

The International Maritime Organization is seeking cuts in the sulphur content of bunker fuel to a maximum of 3.5 percent by 2012 and then to 0.5 percent by 2020.

“I wouldn’t play any cricket on this wicket,” Mahendra Singh Dhoni said with a smile, when asked if such pitches provided good advertisement for Test cricket.

Kumar Sangakkara, meanwhile, had started laughing even before the question was put to him. “Well, if you’re a batsman, you’ll probably love it,” he said at the post-match press conference. “I don’t think anyone expected this wicket to be this flat.”

Sangakkara added that his team’s best chance of getting their first win in India was on the first morning, not when they declared with India 334 behind with one-and-a-half days’ play left. “We had our best chance on the first morning and we just let it go with the line and length we bowled after lunch and tea. There was nothing there in the last two days.”

Dhoni said that even though the team had lost four big wickets early, he knew they weren’t out of the match. “Even at that time, we knew that whichever batsman got in and settled down would go on to score a hundred. We expected the pitch to have a little more bounce for the spinners but there was no help for anyone, either the fast bowlers or the spinners.”

Neither captain was too critical of his spinners, who were touted to have a big say in the series but bowled the most thankless of spells on this track. The four top spinners in this game — Harbhajan Singh, Muttiah Muralitharan, Amit Mishra and Rangana Herath — went for a total of 789 runs and picked up only nine wickets between them.

“Our spinners are still finding their way bowling in Tests in India,” Sangakkara said. “This is a good experience for them, bowling lengthy spells. Spinners were not the most effective on the track.”

‘Sachin’s decision to play on’

We have considered a period of five years for the total capital expenditure and taken into account 15% as return on capital employed to calculate the porting charges.”

Number portability will be implemented almost a year-and-a-half after the government issued guidelines for the MNP service licence in August 2008.

“Oh! I was very apprehensive while using those slangs. I have never used them in my real life but I had to because the script demanded. When you will see this movie, you will understand that it is justified. The movie belongs to a certain terrain where slangs are part of their lingo,” Vidya told IANS in an interview.

Buzz is that Indian Idol Season 3 finalist Meiyung Chang has been signed to play Shahid Kapoor’s best pal in the upcoming Yash Raj film, which is being directed by actor-turned-director Parmeet Sethi. The bus ran off the side of the road and overturned on its side, and the 53 year-old driver, William G. Douglas of Austin, Texas, died at the scene, Virginia State Police said.

After the crash, nine passengers who were on-board walked out through the vehicle’s front windshield, police said.

Cyrus, who is on a concert tour for which the bus was hired, was not in the vehicle when it crashed.

The Cyrus family said in a statement, “We are deeply saddened by the loss of Bill ‘Uncle Bill’ Douglas. … Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family in the midst of this tragedy. He will truly be missed.”

“We will set up 1,000 more towers in state over the next six months,” BSNL-Chennai Telephones Chief General Manager A Subramanian told reporters here.

By setting up such mobile towers, customers would have a better “connectivity” in their BSNL phone, he said.

Accepting that there was not proper connectivity and calls were dropped, he said they would also set up a “complaint cell” in their website www.chennai.bsnl.co.in. for enabling customers to voice their views.

“We will shortly set up this facility so that customers would be able to convey their grievances and the areas which does not provide proper connectivity”, he said.

Box office analysts expect the widely anticipated “New Moon” to make around $100 million in its opening weekend, Friday through Sunday, including screenings from last night at midnight.

The $26.3 million places the film at No. 1 on the chart of box office sales for midnight screenings, said Summit Entertainment, the independent studio behind the film.

“This massive fan response portends an opening weekend that could be one of the biggest of the year and reflects the fervor and excitement surrounding this follow-up to last year’s ‘Twilight,’” Paul Dergarabedian, head of Hollywood.com’s box office tracking division, said in a statement.

“Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince” made $22.2 million in midnight screenings when it was released this past July.

“New Moon” follows the dangerous romance between high school student Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) and immortal vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).

After falling in love with each other in “Twilight,” which came out exactly a year ago, Bella and Edward break up in “New Moon.” Bella finds solace in her friendship with Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), an American Indian who is also a werewolf.

Jacob protects Bella from vampires who kill humans, but she still longs for the gentle blood-sucker Edward who got away.

The “Twilight” film franchise is based on a series of four novels of the same name by author Stephenie Meyer, which her publisher says have sold 85 million copies worldwide.

Despite the crush of fans expected this weekend, “New Moon” has not won over critics. At review site RottenTomatoes.com, the film has received only a 31 percent favorable rating.

Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times panned the film, writing that “sitting through this experience is like driving a pickup in low gear through a sullen sea of Brylcreem.”

Still, movies aimed at teenagers like “New Moon” are generally considered to be immune from bad reviews because younger audiences don’t read them, and not all criticism was negative. “If you buy in to the central romance, you’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll swoon,” wrote British film magazine Empire.

“During the period November 9, 2007, to November 9, 2009, of the 3,405 scrips traded at the BSE, prices of 2,116 scrips (constituting 62.14 per cent of the total scrips) have fallen,” Minister of State for Finance Namo Narain Meena said in a written reply in Lok Sabha.

Replying to a question if the government has any record of how many companies have raised money from the share market illegally in the past two years, the minister said it does not have any such information.

However, Meena said a joint mechanism - Coordination and Monitoring Committee (CMC) — between the Corporate Affairs Ministry and market regulator SEBI has been adopted for identifying vanishing companies and settling policy issue regarding delinquent companies/promoters/directors and monitor progress of actions taken against companies.

“Out of those companies that brought out IPOs during 1992-2005, a total of 238 have been identified as vanishing companies, of which 117 have been tracked back as they have been regular in filing statutory returns etc…no company that had raised funds though public issue during the last two years has been identified as vanishing company,” he said.

The company plans to streamline research and development (R&D) operations in Finland and Denmark, which is expected to affect up to 230 employees at the Oulu site (Finland) and about 100 employees at the Copenhagen site, Nokia said in a statement.

The company has around 17,000 employees in the research and development division, of which more than 2,000 are in Oulu and over 1,000 are based in Copenhagen.

The company said it aims to support the employees with alternative solutions, such as finding new positions within the company for as many employees as possible.

Nokia, in the third quarter of 2009, reported an operating loss of 426 million euros. It had posted an operating profit of 1.5 billion euros in the year-ago period.

Senior citizens (65-years and above), are now eligible for a 20 per cent discount for travel in first and executive classes on international flights, an Air India release said today.

The discount offer, however, is available only on tickets purchased from the airline’s reservation offices in India on the basic fare of market fares.

The special discounted fares will be valid for out-bound travel commencing on or before March 31 next year, it said.

Besides, the discount could be availed only on Air India and erstwhile Indian Airlines
‘ tickets and would be not be applicable on code-share flights, it said.

Moving in tandem with the yellow metal, silver too recovered on the back of fresh industrial demand. A slew of reasons are driving the gold rally. Other than eroding dollar valuation, inflated asset prices around the world due to cheap money policies are leading to diversion of funds to buy gold, traders said.

“There is a mad rush for buying gold as everyone wants a piece of it and the trend is set to continue,” they said. Standard gold (99.5 purity) shot up by Rs 105 per ten grams to end at Rs 17,295 from overnight closing level of Rs 17,190. Pure gold (99.9 purity) also rose by Rs 100 per ten grams to finish at Rs 17,380.

Silver ready (.999 fineness) hardened by Rs 160 per kilo to close at Rs 28,885 from Thursday’s closing level of Rs 28,695. In New York, gold futures ended marginally higher on Thursday, as the dollar came slightly off from its highs. Gold for December delivery rose by 70 cents to end at $1,141.90 an ounce. Silver for December delivery was up by 0.2 per cent at $18.455 an ounce.

The announcement accelerated losses in the shares of Bharti, the country’s top mobile operator. The stock fell as much as 3.3 percent but trimmed losses to 2.7 percent at 284.90 rupees by 0825 GMT in a Mumbai market that was up 0.3 percent.

The price war, aimed at grabbing new users ahead of fresh entrants waiting in the wings, has raised concerns about telecom firms’ profitability. Four new firms, including ventures funded by Telenor and Etisalat, are set to start services this year adding to the existing 11 operators.

Bharti’s market value has slumped more than a fifth this year to about $24 billion and its stock is the second worst performer in the main index that has risen about 72 percent. Rival Reliance Communications has fallen about a quarter in 2009.

Bharti, whose about 115 million users account for more than 23 percent of India’s total mobile subscribers, in September cut call charges within its own network to 50 paise (U.S. 1 cent) a minute and in October launched a low-profit per-second billing plan, reacting to competition.

Tata Teleservices, the No. 6 operator, was the first to launch per-second billing, deviating from the industry norm of per-minute billing. The offer was a roaring success and the firm has topped the new signings for three months in a row.

Bharti’s latest offer will allow users to recieve calls at 60 paise a minute while roaming, and they can make calls at 60 paise a minute within the Airtel network and at 80 paise a minute for calls to rival networks.

Analysts say Bharti still charges about 8-10 percent higher than Reliance’s call prices.

Bharti has said it would be competitive in pricing but had no intention to match the lowest price in the market.

“Last year, there were only 27 billionaires on the India Rich List. This year, the number has almost doubled to 52, just two short of what India had at the peak of the stock market boom in 2007,” according to the Forbes report.

Though the top 10 positions remain largely unchanged, there are some shifts in fortunes across the list. Sunil Mittal, chairman of Bharti Airtel, has moved down from Number 4 to Number 8 and Wipro chairman Azim Premji has moved up to Number 4 position.

“The Ruia brothers (Essar group) with a net worth of $13.6 billion have made it to number 5 this year. Adi Godrej has moved out of the top 10 to the number 12 position. Savitri Jindal, nonexecutive chairwoman of O P Jindal Group, at a net worth of $12 billion this year has made it to number 7 on the list she is one of only six women on the list,” the Forbes report said.

The richest newcomers are two brothers from Torrent Power - Sudhir and Samir Mehta, ranked 23 at $2.02 billion. Another notable mention is Nandan Nilekani who has stepped down from Infosys board and is now a part of government. He ranks 43 with a net worth of $1.25 billion. Southern India’s TV king Kalanithi Maran, ranked 20, almost doubled his net worth to $2.3 billion from $1.2 billion.

Cabinet on Thuresday, 19th November 2009 approved the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission, with an aim to reduce dependence on fossil fuels as source of energy.

The mission aims to feed 20,000 MW to the national grid by 2022, with an initial investment of Rs 4,337 crore.

Speaking to newspersons after the Cabinet briefing, the Minister for Information and Broadcasting, Ms Ambika Soni, said: “The Cabinet has sanctioned Rs 4,337 crore for the initial activities in this regard. The mission will be implemented in three phases.”

For buying power from solar project developers, the Government has designated NTPC Vidyut Vyapar Nigam Ltd as the nodal agency for reaching power purchase agreements.

It would then sell it to State utilities which would be credited against the compulsory renewable energy purchase targets.

These targets are set by the respective State Electricity Regulatory Commissions.

On the other hand, Russian autocrat Vladimir Putin (No. 3) scored points because he likes to throw his weight around by jailing oligarchs, invading neighboring countries and periodically cutting off Western Europe’s supply of natural gas.

To calculate the final rankings, five Forbes senior editors ranked all of our candidates in each of these four dimensions of power. Those individual rankings were averaged into a composite score, which determined who placed above (or below) whom.

Beverly Johnson,57, is an American model, actress, and businesswoman. She made history when she rose to fame as the first black model to appear on the cover of American Vogue in 1974, paving the way for black women in fashion, and future models like Naomi Campbell and Tyra Banks. Johnson was honored in 2006 at Oprah Winfrey’s Legends Ball along with Coretta Scott King, Rosa Parks, Tina Turner and other female African Americans in entertainment, civil rights, and the arts.The New York Times named Johnson one of the 20th century’s most influential people in fashion.

Johnson serves as a celebrity judge on the TV Land series, She’s Got the Look, a reality series where women over 35 compete for a modeling contract and magazine spread. In Addition Johnson has been linked to actors Christopher Noth and she also owns a line of lace wigs called the beverly johnson wigs.

Maiysha was nominated for a Grammy Award earlier this year for Best Urban/Alternative Performance for her single “Wanna Be.” Other guests on the show tonight include former supermodel Beverly Johnson and model Anansa Sims.

Thomas Keller,54,is an American chef, restaurateur, and cookbook writer. He and his landmark restaurant, The French Laundry in Yountville, California, in the Napa Valley, have won multiple awards from the James Beard Foundation, notably the Best California Chef in 1996 and the Best Chef in America in 1997, and the restaurant is a perennial winner in the annual Restaurant Magazine list of the Top 50 Restaurants of the World. In 2005, he was awarded the three star rating in the inaugural Michelin Guide for New York for his restaurant per se, and in 2006, he was awarded three stars in the inaugural Michelin Guide to the Bay Area for his restaurant The French Laundry. He is the only American chef to have been awarded simultaneous Michelin stars for two different restaurants.

In April 2009, Keller became engaged to longtime girlfriend and former general manager at the French Laundry, Laura Cunningham.

Keller is the president of the Bocuse d’Or U.S. team, responsible for recruiting and training the 2009 candidates. The current French Laundry sous-chef Timothy Hollingsworth won the Bocuse d’Or USA semi-finals in 2008, and will be representing the U.S. in the world finals in January 2009 under Keller’s supervision.On describing his reasons for accepting the Bocuse d’Or Team USA presidency, Keller stated, “When Chef Bocuse calls you on the phone and says he’d like you to be president of the American team, you say, ‘Oui, chef’. He’s the role model, the icon”.

International Men’s Day is an international event celebrated on November 19 every year. It was inaugurated in 1999 in Trinidad and Tobago and was supported by the United Nations, and received in principal support from men’s groups in USA, Europe, Africa, Asia, and the Caribbean. Speaking on behalf of UNESCO, Director of Women and Culture of Peace Ms. Ingeborg Breines said of IMD: “This is an excellent idea and would give some gender balance.” She added that UNESCO was looking forward to cooperating with IMD organisers.

Indian Men’s rights organisation Save Indian Family have joined in with an inaugural celebration of IMD on 19 November, 2007. As a first step it accepted 19 November as (Indian) International Men’s Day based on the fact that cricket rivals Australians and West Indies (Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago) were already doing it. The event was again celebrated in India in 2008, and plans have been made to continue the celebration annually.
